DEVIL RUNNER
Edwin Rios at Death & Co Los Angeles said he hated old-fashioneds one too many times, so when we were building a new menu, he was assigned the old-fashioned slot — a playful push to change that opinion. He spent a week drinking them across LA—nobody, he noticed, was using rye—and a cantaloupe-and-cured-meat dish at Hatchet Hall supplied the flavors for his take: rye, mezcal, melon, and ginger shochu stretching the texture. Fruit-driven without announcing it, from skeptic to a believer.
Devil Runner
- 1¼ ounces Wild Turkey 101 rye whiskey
- ½ ounce Rihei ginger shochu
- ¼ ounce San Bartolo Espadin mezcal
- 1 teaspoon Artonic melon liqueur
- 1 teaspoon Pepita Orgeat
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Stir all the ingredients over ice, then strain into a single old-fashioned glass over 1 large ice cube. Express the lemon twist over the drink and discard.
