Faded Ember
Faded Ember is a non-alcoholic take on the Old Fashioned, built to drink like the real thing. Seedlip Grove 42’s flavors of bright Mediterranean orange and lemon peel lead the way, while a lapsang souchong–infused rum alternative adds the drink’s defining smoky flavor. From there, Lyre’s Coffee Liqueur Alternative deepens the middle with espresso and cacao, and a touch of demerara syrup rounds the edges with warm vanilla-like richness. (The optional vegetable glycerin gives it a little extra weight and silk, mimicking the lush texture you’d expect from a spirit-forward build.) Express an orange twist over the top and let the citrus oils light up the smoke.
Faded Ember
1 ounce Seedlip Grove 42
1 ounce Lapsang Souchong-Infused Ritual Rum Alternative (see Note)
½ ounce Lyre's Coffee Liqueur Alternative
1 teaspoon Demerara Syrup (see Note)
2 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (optional)
Garnish: 1 orange twist
Stir all the ingredients with ice, then strain into a single old-fashioned glass over 1 large ice cube. Garnish with the orange twist.
Note: To make the tea-infused NA rum, combine 1 gram lapsang-souchong tea leaves with 75ml of bourbon (this makes enough for about 3 drinks; scale up the infusion if you want to make more). Let sit for 1 hour, then pass through a fine-mesh strainer. To make demerara syrup, combine 2 parts demerara sugar and 1 part water in a sauce pan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar has dissolved. Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate until ready to use, up to 2 months.
